The Five Star 5 – A Collaborative Leadership List
There is an incredible amount of content available on leadership, and I made sure to research none of it for this post!
I wanted to share five key points of what leadership means to me, but I also wanted your comments to compile a longer list. Don’t research, just share what you feel! I will post the full list on my blog next week.
- Motivate, inspire and most importantly have fun
- Give an enthusiastic thank you when things go well, and a supportive ear when things go wrong
- Be a positive example with your work ethic, and have a desire to succeed that others are proud to follow
- Understand that all your employees are unique people and need to be managed accordingly
- As often as possible smile, laugh and have a bounce in your step!
Sarah has a wonderful blog going here, and I encourage you to check it out. After I read this post yesterday, I found myself contemplating the message several times. Enjoy, and take a moment to really think about it. Are you doing what you really love?
Lizzy Bell changed from an unrewarding life as an accountant to her dream job as a photographer and was interviewed recently by coach and journalist Suzy Greaves (during a bike ride from Lands End to John O’Groats!).
Lizzy’s story is such a great one for anyone stuck in a rut and wondering what business to start, I wanted to blog about it. Especially following a recent survey that said being a photographer is No. 4 on the top 10 list of dream jobs.
So how did she do it?
Lizzy originally trained as an accountant and got a ‘proper job.’ “I’m not even that good at maths’ she laughs. “Like many people you end up in a career, you earn this money and you get channelled and things don’t maybe feel quite right and you just keep going and going. I got to my mid to late 30s and…

Saturday Music Memories – Road Trips Home
Welcome back to Saturday Music Memories!
I warned you during the first post that my musical taste is all over the map! What better way to show you then to go from an 80’s Classic Rock band to a current country star in the second edition!
I don’t follow country music much, but I do keep tabs on everything Keith Urban does. He truly cares about his profession and fans, and leaves it all out on the stage every night he performs. I have had the pleasure of seeing him play live twice. Each time, it was for over 2 1/2 hours. I did a post recently discussing passion vs raw talent. In case you missed it, here is the link:
raw-talent-vs-passion-and-the-winner-is
Keith is one of those rare performers who has the raw talent and the passion for his “job”. He is certainly living the dream.
I live 14 hours by car from my home town, and my family has done that drive with me 10 times in the last 11 years. Since this song came out, we play it multiple times on each trip! Every time I hear it, I think of all the fun we have had (and will have again in the future) on the highways of the beautiful Western Canadian Prairies.
Have A Laugh Fridays – Unfortunate “Conference Call”
It is Father’s Day on Sunday, and I will be watching the U.S. Open Golf Championship with my son. This is my favourite golf-business commercial, and I recommend you take 30 seconds to watch it. Have a great weekend!
Could You Be More Focused?
Eben Pagan is one of my true inspirations from the internet marketing space. I could listen to him speak all day!
A couple of years ago he launched a program called “Wake Up Productive”, and some short videos are posted on YouTube. I absolutely love the message in this series, and I have included his video on “Focus” for your viewing pleasure today.
It is only a little over 3 minutes long if you skip the promotion of the series at the beginning and end.
If you would like to see the series of videos, click this link to the “Wake Up Productive” channel on YouTube.

Have a great day!
Just an awesome read this morning via Doug Dickerson’s blog! I had not heard of this story yet, and I encourage you to take a few minutes to read it today. Have an awesome Sunday…
A good measure of leadership is to help those who are doing poorly to do well and to help those who are doing well to do even better. – Jim Rohn
Chronicled in countless newspapers across the country including ESPN, we were all inspired by the recent act of kindness of high school junior Meghan Vogel. At the recent Division III girls state track meet at Jesse Owens Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, a high school junior by the name of Meghan Vogel captured the hearts thousands around the country.
In the finals Meghan had won the girls 1,600 meters race. In a personal best, she posted a time of 4:58:31, the first time she had broken the five minute mark. After an awards ceremony Meghan had time to take a short break to rest and get ready for the 3,200 in which she was seeded seventh.

My First “Saturday Music Memories” Post
I love music!
I have loved it since I received my first cassette tape when I was 10 years old one Christmas. Many of my best memories growing up were at Arena concerts with my friends, or outdoor music festivals. To this day, music is still a huge part of my life! I love my iPod, and I love making “digital mixed tapes” of great new songs, and “old school” favourites.
I have wanted to include content about music on my blog for quite some time, but was not sure how. I started thinking this week how I have had the ability for many years to connect certain songs to memories from my past. So as often as I can, I am going to share stories about my memories of a particular song, and include a music video on Saturdays.
WARNING – my musical taste is quite diverse! Some would say it is all over the map.
Today’s song for the inaugural “Saturday Music Memories” is an early 80’s Canadian Classic by Loverboy called “Working for the Weekend”.
I was 8 or 9 years old, and my dad was working for the summer at a cadet camp in the resort town of Gimli, Manitoba, Canada on the picturesque Lake Winnipeg. Every two weeks, the cadets would go home, and another group would be brought in for sailing training. On the last night before they left, there would be a farewell dance at the camp. I first heard this song at one of those dances.
I originally thought this song was by Australia Legends “Men at Work”. But as I got a little older, I realized that this band was from Canada, and they were the toast of the town for many years in the early 1980’s. They still do some touring from time to time to this day.
Enjoy my first video, and have a great Saturday!
Have A Laugh Fridays – “Old School” Sales Training
Some sales training techniques are a little outdated. Check out this 2 minute video as this rep explains to the trainer why he thinks his lessons are a little to “old school” for his liking! Have a great weekend….
