How Educated Are You?

bigstock-Apple-Word-Cloud-Back-To-Scho-40870060

We know it all

We have all the right answers

Our learning was done the last day we walked out of school

That is narrow-minded thinking!

  • Our brain needs “exercise”
  • Keep growing and learning

When is the last time you listened to a great podcast, grabbed a book or read a blog?

I know talk radio and music can be fun to listen to while driving, but schedule “educational windshield time” each week.

Where Did It All Go Wrong?

This has been by far my most popular post in the nine months that I have blogged, and I thought it was time to revisit it and keep the conversation going. There are some incredible comments up for review. Some of my childhood friends even chimed in to challenge me with some of my content in the post. I would love you to take a read and  respond with your honest feelings on the subject. Maybe I will turn this conversation in to a mini e-book or something in the future because it sure captivated my readers. Enjoy!

I recently returned from a trip to my hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.  Winnipeg is 8 hours north of Minneapolis, Minnesota if you are unaware. This is the first time in my career that I am able to work in my hometown since I moved away 11 years ago, and I was very excited to reconnect in my community.

Although most of the trip was awesome, I had a surprising conversation with somebody from my past that bothered me greatly. For those of you who know me well, I have “facial recognition software” engrained in my brain for remembering people who I grew up with. I was at the 100th anniversary of the suburb that I grew up in last Saturday and approached at least 15 people from my youth that I had not seen in 4EVER! That was so much fun. I digress…

I was at a trade show earlier in the week and ordered supper at a concession stand. I changed my drink order, and the person serving me smiled and gave a double take. They saw that I was wearing a name tag, and asked if I went to school in the suburb that I actually grew up in. I paused for a moment and said yes. Instead of saying that I did not remember them, I asked what their name was. After they replied, I instantly recognized their face.

The difficult part of the dialog is they hesitated to say their name out of embarrassment for the job that they were doing. I took a few moments to speak with them after receiving my drink, and saw them the next day as well.

21 years removed from high school, I was not expecting somebody to be working in that setting, and my “facial recognition software” was not activated at the time. If they were proud of the job that they were doing, and did not care what others  thought, they would have had no issue telling me what their name was.

There is a silver lining for this person. It is never too late to change career paths. The generation of  “go to school, get a job, find somebody, get married, have some kids, work at the same thing for 40+ years and retire” is long gone.

One of my best friends dropped everything in his late 30’s, started working towards a totally different career, and is now very close to completing his studies.

We can’t turn back the clock and hit “reset” to that day that we walked out of high school with that diploma in hand, but we can certainly hit the “reset” button RIGHT NOW and start working towards something more fulfilling.

If there is anything this experience really taught me, is that I have to keep working towards what I really want out of life, no matter how hard it seems sometimes. I would rather fall flat on my face and know that I tried, than think about it, and never do anything. I don’t care if you are in sales, management, general business, or doing whatever keeps you paying the bills, but be sure that you are happy doing it.

I will always keep trying, scratching and clawing towards surpassing my goals, no matter how tough things seem to get. Just ask those who played hockey against me when I was a one man wrecking crew pushing for victory as a kid!

  • How is your job/career going?
  • Are you jumping out of bed excited about what you are doing from the moment your feet hit the floor each morning?
  • If you had an unexpected meeting with somebody from your past, would you be embarrassed to tell them what you are doing?
  • If so, whatcha gonna do about it?

The Five Star 5 – Just Go “Google” Yourself!

Search WWW

Remember way way back in the 1990’s if somebody wanted to find out what you were all about, they either had to ask somebody that knew you, or ask you directly?

Well this internet thing has been a real game changer for researching people quickly!

I hop on Google several times a month to see what shows up for my name, and the name of my blog.

What I look for is:

  • What shows up on the first page (and what may have dropped off)
  • What new search results are showing up
  • What new “shares” of my content are showing up; where I owe somebody a thank you
  • Is there anything negative being that I should look in to
  • It’s just really fun to scroll through lots of pages of results as I reflect on my online journey!

Bonus – some people have very common names, so it is a good idea to see where your content may be getting confused with somebody elses’

Your brand can become very powerful, and what shows up on web searches can help big time by providing people with the opportunity to get to know you very quickly.

If what shows up online is all positive, then you are good to go! If you are seeing a lot of negativity, probably time to review your branding strategies and assess some changes for the future.

  • When is the last time you “Googled” yourself?
  • Were you surprised with some of the search results (good or bad)?
  • Are you going to pay more attention to your online search results in the future?

The tools are there to take your game to the next level. You might as well embrace them and build as strong a personal brand possible!

Is It Time To See “The Other Side Of The Fence?”

Young Businessman Thinking and Wondering While Writing a Paper

I looked at many notebooks of my writing one day and …

Thought nobody would care what I had to say

Did not feel confident in my abilities

Was apprehensive and nervous

Realized nobody else I knew was doing this

Did not feel I was creative enough

Something inside of me finally clicked and I took action!

I started a blog

I was still scared

What if nobody viewed it?

What if I did not make any new connections?

What if I faded away in to “Google anonymity”?

To my surprise, posts …

Were viewed

Attained “likes”

Lead to followers

Were shared via social media

Acquired comments

But you have to …

Commit to do the work

Put yourself out there

Engage your community

Care

Show up regularly

The game changer for me occurred early on after I received a personal email from a reader.

It was simple and to the point, but it meant so much.

“Thanks for the post Tim. It really resonated with me. Keep up the great work!”

Validation!

If you are on the fence, I understand (more than you know). Been there done that! Why not jump over? You might like what you find on the other side 🙂

  • How has your writing experience been?
  • Better than expected?
  • More struggles than you bargained for?

Would love if you shared your thoughts in the comments section!

Good Day Everyone!

When I started to write more than four years ago now, I had no idea where this journey was going to take me. I was just hoping that somebody other than close friends and family would take the time to read what I had to say at some point.

Through some incredible people who I follow like Pat Flynn from “Smart Passive Income” and John Lee Dumas from “Entrepreneur On Fire” I have learned about the power of sharing results of online businesses. Now these fine gentlemen have fully operational business that they make very good income at. I am not there at, but I have been very proud to share some key milestone moments along the way with my readers.

None of this has been done to brag, or pump out my chest to proclaim that I am superman or something.

I just want to inspire anyone who is struggling to get an online business going, start a blog, or even write their first article. Maybe you are stuck a bit (like I was recently) and are attempting to take things to the next level!

  • You can do this.
  • Your opinion matters.
  • We all have good days and bad, but the good WILL outweigh the bad.

You just gotta keep moving forward.

I still remember the day that I first grabbed a pen and notebook and started to write my thoughts a few months after I lost a job in early 2010. I was early for a sales call at my new role and something sparked creativity inside of me and I started to make notes about a few business ideas I had.

I am so happy that I kept writing, and ultimately gave myself the opportunity to have my message heard.

I am working on my first website so we can “keep this party going” for many more years to come.

  • Where are you at with your business?
  • Things going as planned?
  • Need a little reminder of how awesome you are, or need a little “nudge” to move things forward?

As always, feel free to leave a comment, or shoot me an email at TimMushey@gmail.com

Would love to hear from ya!

Perfection Or Published?

bigstock-Business---1432678
So…..
  • Are you getting a little too cute with blog posts, ebooks or a course that you are waiting to publish?
  • Have you shelved that new training video that just doesn’t seem right?
  • Is that first audio file of your podcast just sitting on the computer “collecting dust”?

Many of us strive for perfection, and that is ok in the right circumstances, but not online.

People want to get to know the true you and will come to appreciate your imperfections.

If you keep procrastinating and don’t put your content out there, nobody will get to know the real you!

What are you waiting for?

Hit “publish”, “upload” or whatever you gotta do to take action and take the next steps in your business!

Enjoy the rest of your week.

The Five Star 5 -Ideas, Ideas, Ideas!

Thinking Business Woman Looking Up On Many Questions Mark Isolat

Coming up with fresh, entertaining and captivating blog content on a regular basis can be tough. I am kind of lucky, in that my brain is always “on” and ideas continually flow!

But I still need to look for more inspiration, and came up with the three fantastic articles that have inspired me to keep evolving my content!

From “Copy Blogger” http://bit.ly/1cpJWdq

From “Start Blogging Online” http://bit.ly/1hLJ4Xg

From “ProBlogger”  http://bit.ly/1bl3kfN

Here are a few things that help me gather information and create content.

  1. Always have a pen and notebook within arm’s reach. Do this electronically if you like, and NEVER assume that you will remember something later without documenting it!
  2. Create an “Inspiration File”. Archive articles or other content that has peaked your curiosity to refer back to later.
  3. Be aware of things around you. Great ideas can come from the radio, TV, people you socialize with, or observing others.
  4. Review old content or notes.  A slightly different twist can bring new life to information.
  5. No idea is silly or crazy! No matter how out of left field something may seem at the time, you never know what might come of it!

Keep creating, be open to all possibilities with your writing, and HAVE FUN 🙂

Getting To Know Tim!

IMG_0785

This is a repost of my first blog entry on January 23, 2012! I have many new followers, so this is a great opportunity to get to know me a little better!

My name is Tim Mushey, and those who know me well call me “Moosh”. I have decided to start this blog with a “Get to Know Me” post so you will be able to understand where the inspiration for this content came from!

I have loved to lead, motivate and inspire others for as long as I can remember. I have often been told that I have the gift of gab, and always have something to say. One of my groomsmen described me best to the guests at my wedding,

“All you have to do is say hi to Tim on the phone or in person, and next thing you know, you have all the updates on the latest TV shows, sporting events, bands and current events. Speaking to him is like flipping channels with a remote control.”

And he’s right! I’m passionate about many things in life – music, sports, my family, friends and work – and I love to share information with everyone! I believe that if I had not battled a stuttering problem all of my life, I would have a career in TV sports broadcasting in some capacity. I often envisioned myself as a sports anchor growing up!

As the son of two teachers, education has always been important to me. I achieved a Bachelor of Commerce Honours degree at the age of 22, and with my first “real job”, was managing a car rental branch by the age of 24. I took a little break after two and a half years in that fast paced business to travel to Australia and New Zealand. I was nervous leaving my family and friends, but a good friend of mine quit his job to do the same thing a few months before, and I thought that was an incredible idea! I ended up travelling for over 7 months, and the experience was better than I could have ever imagined. I made many life long friends from all over the world on that journey, and even managed to squeeze in some work experience selling encyclopedias – true story!

When I returned home in 1999, my career path lead me to outside sales and I have never looked back. It did not matter if I was selling mattresses, credit reports, electrical products, corporate parking programs or photocopiers, there was one commonality – I loved to sell! I had an exciting opportunity to manage a team of 10 reps and support staff with about 40% coverage of Canada in 2007, but changes occurred simultaneously within the organization, and I ended up declining the offer. To this day, I think back to what might have been, but deep down I know I made the right decision for my career and family. Being a Sales Manager was my dream job for many years.

Throughout the years since I completed my degree, I’ve realized that university was just the beginning of my education. So much of my success in sales didn’t come from what I’d read in text books, it has come from what I have learned in the field. Each role, and each account specifically has challenged me to grow each day. I have a wealth of knowledge, tools & systems that I am eager to share with others in sales, and those considering it as their profession in the future.

The internet has provided me with the ability to broadcast all over the world now. If I had affected lives in my own communities over the course of my life, why could I not affect lives everywhere in the future? I have learned to manage my stutter, and even though I still have to work on it daily, I am now ready to get in front of the camera, feel confident, and once and for all lose the words “self-conscious” from my vocabulary!

I hope you enjoy this blog. It truly comes from the heart, and was an absolute pleasure being involved in all aspects of its creation and its ever-changing content going forward!

My blog turns  2 today! Thank you for all the support. It means the world to me that you would take interest in what I am doing!

35,000 page views and 750 followers truly blows me away! The cool part is I am just getting started.

  • CARE about your audience (and they will come back for more!)

My wife took time out of her busy schedule last night to choose the picture for this post. I love it!
