It is no secret by now that my musical taste is quite diverse.
Growing up in the ’80’s I loved many different genres of music, but I especially liked to rock! I know I know it seems far-fetched for such a clean-cut guy like myself, but it is true!
I will never forget buying Guns N’ Roses Appetite For Destruction cassette. I was quite self-conscious that the music was a little too heavy and the message a bit too over the top for my parent’s liking. But they were pretty cool about it! Some of my friends were very in to Guns N’ Roses and we went to a concert once in Winnipeg, Canada. Lead Singer Axl Rose was less than impressed to be there which did not surprise us. My friends and I translated another song in to french, played it on an acoustic guitar, and sang it which was fun for a class project.
But this post is actually about Slash, and reinventing yourself. It is easy to “judge a book by its cover” if you have not followed Slash’s career, but he is a truly brilliant person and musician. Ever since the “soap opera” that was the first line-up of Guns N’ Roses broke up, all he has continued to do is keep working and trying to reinvent himself. He has had several different solo projects and the highly acclaimed Velvet Revolver, with former Guns N’ Roses band mates including Scott Welland from Stone Temple Pilots.
But I believe his best work is happening now with a lead singer named Myles Kennedy. You can google his name if you would like to see his bio, but the bottom line is they just click. While Axl Rose is sitting at home doing whatever he is doing, Slash is out playing new material with his incredible band plus Guns N’ Roses classics.
This is one of my favourite songs, and I believe one of the most recognizable songs of all time, even after just one strum of the guitar!
If Slash was in the corporate world, I would want him on my team, because he never gives up, never stops believing in himself and those around him, and just keeps affecting people’s lives in a positive way.
You may know this one!
I fell in love with Matchbox Twenty the first time I heard the hit single “Push” all those years ago. A couple of years later in 1998, I went to Australia and they were just MASSIVE there!
I have followed their career very closely ever since.
Here is a FANTASTIC version of “Overjoyed” from their latest release, North
Have a great weekend and enjoy this summer day!
I have not been running as much as I should this spring, but I finally got out this week for the first time in a while.
I make sure to have FANTASTIC rock music on my iPod to keep me motivated.
This wicked track by Foo Fighters came on, and I hit repeat three times!
Have a great day and embrace the first day of summer!
I was searching for Alice In Chains content for today’s Saturday Music Memories and stumbled across this beauty of a live cover!
Gretchen Wilson burst on to the country scene in 2004 with her smash hit “Red Neck Woman” and really changed the landscape of country-rock.
This tribute to Heart with Alice In Chains is absolutely incredible! Nancy Wilson is playing guitar on this great version of Barracuda!
Enjoy your Saturday!
There are certain things that citizens hold near and dear to their hearts in their home countries.
In Canada we have hockey, The Tim Horton’s coffee shop chain, and for music we have The Tragically Hip.
They burst on to the scene in the late 80’s and have made quality music that has united a nation for close to 30 years now (wow I must be getting old).
In the spring of 1991 I graduated from high school, and our class embarked on a bus trip from Winnipeg, Manitoba across the border to Minneapolis, Minnesota. We were off to a fun-filled place called Apple River. It was an awesome time, and with 10+ hours on a bus each way, the music flowed (among other things) for a bunch of 17 and 18-year-old rowdies.
At that time, I had no interest in the Tragically Hip, but it seemed to be on constant repeat for the entire trip! Before you knew it, I was hooked, and this album did it to me. Their first real statement on Canadian airwaves called “Road Apples”.
Here is the biggest hit of that album – “Little Bones“.
Enjoy and have a FANTASTIC weekend.
When my son was a baby in 2006/2007 he had a lot of trouble sleeping. Only certain music would help him settle down, like The Eagles “Hell Freezes Over” concert from 1994!
The other was James Blunt’s “Back To Bedlam” cd. I always enjoyed James’ sound and style, but after hearing it for 697 days straight, I needed a break!
Turns out that I did not listen to him again for five years, until recently.
I am really digging his new hit “Bonfire Heart”!
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
I was not a huge fan of U2 growing up in the 80’s, but I really started to appreciate them in the 90’s.
I saw them during their Pop Mart tour in 1995 and was blown away!
They played on Jimmy Fallon’s first Tonight Show earlier this week and… well it was AWESOME!
Check out this acoustic version of their smash hit “Ordinary Love”.
Have a FANTASTIC weekend!
There are not a lot of bands today that make me stop in my tracks. Imagine Dragons are one of them.
Their performance of Radioactive on the Grammy’s was awesome. So was this one from last week on Saturday Night Live featuring Lamar Kendrick.
“Long Live Rock And Roll” is a new Daughtry track and it is AWESOME! There are over 20 references to musicians/bands!
I have listened to it 20+ times this week!
Four important questions need to be answered after you have a look/listen:
- Billy Joel or Elton John?
- The Beatles or The Stones?
(and for the rockers)…… wait for it:
- Guns N’ Roses or Motley Crue?
- Van Halen (with David Lee Roth) or Van Halen with (Sammy Hagar)?

Have a fantastic weekend and kick back and enjoy some great music!
Well the day has come! After waiting 7 long months, Keith Urban is in Edmonton tonight.
This will be the 3rd time we have seen him live, and he never disappoints.
He is on a short list of acts today that is well worth every penny.
Here is the video for his smash hit “Long Hot Summer“. Very appropriate to help get through a long cold winter in Western Canada!
Anybody else hear a “Message In A Bottle” vibe by the Police in the melody?
We are really rockin’ now over at my Facebook page. Come see what the fuss is about and “like” us!
Have a great weekend.
