Broc does an awesome job discussing why presenting is so critical to your success. I realized this several years ago when I joined Toastmasters. Broc and I are online friends now, and his content “rocks”!

Rock and roll2Does anyone else go to concerts and try to figure out how to do your job better? No? A side effect of being a presenter and facilitator is that I cannot attend any training, speech, or event without noticing what is done well, what could be better, and what I can learn from it.

Eighteen months ago I wrote a post called “Rock and Roll Presentation Skills” after seeing one of my favorite European bands perform. As a presenter, this band inspires me more than any other with their stage presence, energy, and connection to the crowd. By sheer coincidence the same band was performing in Dallas the same weekend I was there to attend HRevolution and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to see them again.

Reflecting on what I took from this performance, the presentation lessons hold true with what I learned from their last performance.

The Five Star 5 – Why Public Speaking Sucks!

Many people are terrified to speak in public and/or give presentations. Here are five reasons why public speaking and presenting can suck:

  1. You were not prepared / did not understand your content
  2. You did not practice ahead of time
  3. You did not know your audience well enough
  4. You did not have a back up plan when things like visual aids had technical issues
  5. You have not at least visited your local Toastmasters Club as a guest, to see how they can help develop your speaking skills

Public speaking and presenting can be a rewarding experience if you address these five points, and several others.

Can’t Miss “Five Star” Presentations!

Presenting in front of colleagues, prospects or customers can be very difficult  if not terrifying. But it does not have to be. As a Toastmaster for 18 months now, I am continually looking for ways to improve my presentations.

It is a work in process, and thankfully each time I get up in front of an audience is a step in the right direction.

Here are five things that I focus on each time I present:

  1. Preparation – I know; sounds crazy but it really does make a difference! Practice ahead of time and make sure audio-visual equipment is working before you start
  2. Timing and organization – Be respectful of people’s busy schedules and don’t go over time. Always have a question and answer period near the end, but close with your own summary
  3. Less is more NEVER put too much information on a PowerPoint slide. Information overload tunes people out!
  4. What is your value – Smile often, be engaging and limit dead air. These speeches tend to get monotonous and boring. Stand out!
  5. Information gathering – Have a sign in sheet. This is a great way to confirm contact information and follow-up at a later date

When Are You At Your Best?

– Wondering why a presentation went so poorly?
– Bewildered by the lack of success of phone cold calls?
– Amazed that a sales call was less than well received?
– Frustrated by the difficulty catching up on paperwork at the end the week?
 
– Have you thought about what time of day you are typically at your best?
– Do you know when you should not be attempting high level activities?
 
Take some time to think about this as you plan your next week. This is often overlooked as schedules are planned.
 
– If you are not a morning person, is it reasonable to expect to hit a presentation out of the park at 8 am?
– If your body and mind is starting to wind down after 3 pm, is that a good time to be starting to phone cold call and expect to be energetic and engaging?
– If you tend to feel sluggish right after lunch, should you be scheduling a sales call shortly after you eat?
– If your organization skills need work, should you be putting off cleaning up all of your To Do’s until late Friday?

I can do a presentation at 8 am because I am a morning person, but I try to avoid them later in the day. Certain people are much more effective well in to the afternoon. Cold call when you are at your best for maximum results.

Lunch affects people differently, so plan your afternoon calls accordingly. I am guessing few people look forward to cleaning up their To Do’s late in the day Friday. Put systems in place to keep up during the week, so you don’t end your week on a bad note!

– Is it time to make adjustments to your schedule?

You should stop by a Toastmasters meeting if you are interesting in developing your speaking and leadership skills. The best way to find out what this organization has to offer is to see for yourself!

  1. Practice public speaking in a very positive environment
  2. Develop as a leader
  3. Meet new people (network within your club and district)
  4. Hone organization, preparation and time management skills

We need a certain amount of arrogance if we want to:

  • Make a difference in the world.
  • Become an expert in our field.
  • Share our brilliant ideas.
  • Stand up in front of a group and present with confidence.
  • Make that call to sell whatever it is we’re selling.
  • Dare to maximise our potential.

I know that arrogance is often an unattractive and unwanted attribute, but it can come in handy sometimes.

My Toastmasters Speech – Don’t Let Setbacks Change The Incredible You

In March of 2012, I entered the annual club contest for my Toastmasters Public Speaking group. It was a great experience, and I was runner up to a very worthy contestant. I actually had the presentation recorded that night, but  “technical difficulties” prevented  me from uploading it. I enjoyed the experience, and wanted to share it with you. So I recreated it from the comfort of my own home the next day.

We have all been through bumps in the roads in our lives, and the key to personal and professional success is how we fight through each setback, to still become who we really want to be.
