What Are You Prepared To Give Up – Right Now?

Hockey referee

My name is Tim Mushey, and I am a “hockey-a-holic”. The labour strife in the National Hockey League ended a couple of weeks ago, and hockey is finally back!

I am super excited that the coolest game in the world is back, but I had to make a decision. I quit all of my hockey pools, cold turkey! For the first time in many years, I am not in one hockey pool, NOT ONE! To be clear, this was never about the money. It was about fun with friends, and the competitive spirit to try to out do each other.

Although I miss it a lot, it had to be done. I have gone from checking the scores around 25 times a night (not joking) to maybe twice. I don’t have to watch all the highlights before bed, just when I have time.

That extra time I have every day can now be spent working towards my goals. Perhaps it is writing my blog, connecting and following up with social media activities, or learning and planning my next steps online.

If feels good that my time is being put to better use now, and I can also focus more on my family.

  • What do you have to quit “cold turkey”?
  • What is going to help you move closer to achieving your goals that you have not been focusing on?

Remember, a little bit every day is still a great place to start!

I miss hockey pools, but it won’t help me retire early 🙂

About Tim Mushey

Dynamic and energized sales rep, mentor and leader since 1999. This blog will be about sales, social networking, personal branding, leadership, music and having some laughs! Don’t be surprised if I mix it up on occasion, and talk about something totally different! I thrive on being part of successful, forward thinking teams. I am ready to go from the moment my feet hit the floor each morning, with the expectation that new adventures will be coming my way. It is rare that there isn't a smile on my face, as I take it all in, and have some fun along the way!

  1. Hi Tim, I had to quit shooting from the hip and become more structured with my time. I actually make a time schedule for my “at home” time in order to complete what I need so I can have time to read and write. I also make room for free days which are a treat. Have a wonderful Tuesday!

  2. Timely advice Tim, in today’s economic climate how many people out there are complaining about the lack of opportunities, but still spend all of their spare time down the bar or watching TV or playing video games etc. etc. ?

  3. Nice quick reminder! I’m back to the Covey way of making list and it’s keeping on track as the day passes.

    • Hey thanks for stopping by. What a great idea. Sometimes people think that we have to reinvent the wheel as technology advance, but sometimes old school methods still do the trick. Thanks again and great job!

  4. Another great post Tim.

I need to slow down on the TV time. But you nailed it, what will get me closer to my goals? I even set a reminder for myself on my phone that pops up right at 9pm every week night to “Take Action”. It is definitely working.

  5. Nice post Tim! It’s almost the exact conversation I had with myself at the start of the NFL season. No fantasy football this year – checking my phone WAY TOO many times got me no closer to my goals.

  6. Nice post Moosh! Being a serious hockey fan myself I applaud your commitment. Just don’t forget about hockey altogether, you still need the occasional escape. Besides the Jets need a little bit of your support.

You are doing great and your efforts are greatly appreciated by those who follow you. BTW love the Facebook fan page!

    • Hey Bruce! Thanks so much for taking the time to comment. I will NEVER not be in love with hockey. Just had to take a step back in terms of the pools. Truth be told I have really enjoyed watching the games and not worry about which players are scoring. Just watching for the sake of watching has been quite refreshing! My Jets will be ok don’t you worry. Thanks for the compliments about the Facebook page. It is starting to come together. Stay well and enjoy the rest of the week.
