Saturday Music Memories – “Put Me In Coach”…

“I’m ready to play”!

I love baseball. I quit when I was 15 years old, but should have kept playing. I heard John Fogerty’s “Centerfield” on Thursday, and it brought back some very vivid memories.

I was about 12 or 13 years old. I played in baseball tournament over a weekend, and had a great time. The baseball diamonds were well-groomed, and there were more fans than usual, and it just felt different. Every time we took the field, “Centerfield” played, and I remember thinking how cool that was.

I don’t think we won the tournament, but I had a fantastic time. The only bad memory I had of the weekend was about a slide in to second base. The good news is I was safe; the bad news was I had to sleep on my side for a week because of the scrapes! OUCH…

  1. The emotion recalling power of music is incredible isn’t it. A couple of years ago I was in a flash-mob. If I ever want to give myself an absolute boost, all I have to do is play that flash mob music and back come all the great feelings 🙂

  2. Tim, haven’t been in here for a while but just saw your comment on playing baseball. I used to play Little League baseball as a pitcher until for some unknown reason I couldn’t throw a baseball accurately any more (footballs were no problem, and U was high school q-back).
My point is this: any mention of baseball brings good memories.
Recently, I co-wrote a baseball book, Carolina Baseball: Pressure Makes Diamonds, with J David Miller, foreword by Head Coach Ray Tanner. The book recounts the ups and downs of the 119-year hostory of the U of SC Gamecocks baseball program through their 2010-2011 National Championship wins.

The purpose for the book is to help Coach Tanner’s foundation build a Miracle League ballpark for kids with physically-challenged bodies, who live the game and want to play it. Any purchase contributes funds to that goal.
